A North Korean hacker infiltrated MetaMask to participate in code development, with no data or fund loss

BlockBeats News, July 19th, Consensys, the developer of MetaMask, discovered that a North Korean developer had entered the MetaMask team under a false identity and worked for about a month, participating in core wallet code development. The individual used the name "Tyler Knapp," joined as an advisor through a contractor, had a GitHub account under imyugioh, and made code commits from March 9th to April.

Some of the code the developer was involved in related to the transfer of assets between crypto and fiat currencies. Consensys immediately cut off the individual's access upon discovering the risk, instructed employees to pause product releases and avoid contact with the individual, and reported the matter to law enforcement.

Matt Corva, Consensys' Chief Legal Counsel, stated that an investigation confirmed no assets or data were misappropriated, no malicious code was deployed, and user funds and security were not compromised. The company is currently reviewing its contractor background check process.

TRM Labs stated that developers' work environments have become a significant entry point for attackers to obtain crypto company keys and withdrawal approval systems. Previously, an Ethereum-funded project identified 100 suspected North Korean IT professionals among 53 crypto projects.
