Institutional Research Report Reveals Significant Delay in Two Key AI Data Center Technology Pathways

BlockBeats News, June 10th. Independent research firm SemiAnalysis, focusing on the semiconductor, AI infrastructure, and data center fields, released its latest multi-vertical industry research note today, with the core conclusion pointing to a significant delay in two key technology pathways for AI data centers.

The first is a significant delay in NVIDIA's native 800VDC architecture rollout. The report indicates that NVIDIA's original plan to widely adopt the single-ended 800VDC power supply design has been postponed to 2028. While the 400VDC high-voltage direct current solution is progressing as planned, hyperscalers currently prefer to continue using mature low-voltage solutions or gradually transition to 400VDC, rather than rushing to switch to 800VDC. The report points out that the marginal benefits of 800VDC in current grid power supply and efficiency improvements are not sufficient to support its complexity, leading the industry to temporarily slow down.

The second is the slowdown in the production and delivery pace of Co-Packaged Optics (CPO). The expected shipment volume of CPO in 2027 is significantly lower than previous aggressive market forecasts, and the timeline for large-scale production may be delayed to 2028 or even 2029. The shipment volume of scale-out CPO switches faces a downward risk, with the main bottlenecks being optical engine connection yields, ASIC integration difficulty, and overall cost-effectiveness. Currently, the optimistic optical engine connection yield is about 95%, but the CPO production driven by a single ASIC is still very limited.

SemiAnalysis indicates that 400VDC products are expected to ramp up in the second quarter of 2026, with significant growth expected in 2027; some Near Package Optics (NPO) projects may accelerate. However, the downside is that Sidecar shipments dependent on new platforms such as Rubin Ultra/Kyber will be delayed to the 2028 window, putting pressure on related power, switch, and optical module suppliers. SemiAnalysis holds a relatively positive view on companies such as Anixter, Vertiv, Legrand, while being more cautious about Lumentum, Himax, Navitas, Wolfspeed, among others.
