CoinEx News: A New York lawsuit asks a court to brand 39,069 long-dormant Bitcoin wallets — about 3.8 million BTC, worth $238–293 billion as the price moves, including addresses tied to Satoshi Nakamoto — as "abandoned property." Justice Kathy King stayed the case on June 5, with a July 14 hearing. Since no one can move the coins without the private keys, analysts say the lawsuit remains a highly speculative legal experiment with low odds of success. The real prize is a "cloud on title": a judgment the plaintiffs could wave at a regulated exchange or custodian if these coins ever surface there.
Those coins could move for many reasons — the owner returning, an heir, a hacker, or a future quantum computer that derives private keys from public keys already exposed on-chain. However it happens, the judgment becomes a lever to freeze the coins and force the true owner to surface and prove ownership, giving up the anonymity they relied on.
