Kimi K3 Dispute Escalates as US Sanctions Threat Meets Startup Pushback

CoinEx News: On July 22, White House science chief Michael Kratsios accused Moonshot AI of using large-scale, covert distillation of Anthropic’s Fable model to develop Kimi K3 and of accessing restricted Nvidia GB300 servers in Thailand. Kratsios disclosed no supporting evidence. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said sanctions or an Entity List designation would be considered if industrial-scale distillation crossed into intellectual-property theft. The same day, the Little Tech Association—representing 179 founders and member companies, including Y Combinator and Proton—urged the Trump administration not to block US developers from Chinese open-weight models, arguing that broad restrictions would weaken American startups. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang separately said US companies should be allowed to use strong Chinese open models. The confrontation has shifted Kimi K3 from a model-performance story into a test of US AI access policy.
