BlockBeats News, July 28, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by WSJ, Nvidia and OpenAI are in discussions for a super AI data center project with a scale of about $500 billion. The location is in the southern part of Ohio, USA, with an expected maximum power capacity of 10GW, potentially becoming the world's largest data center project.

The report states that Nvidia may provide about $250 billion in funding to OpenAI to lease a data center campus developed by SBEnergy, an energy subsidiary of SoftBank. The total project cost is estimated to exceed $500 billion, including up to $350 billion for AI chip procurement.

The Phase I of the data center project is expected to be completed by 2028, with an initial power capacity of about 800MW. If fully implemented, the 10GW power scale will far exceed most current large-scale AI infrastructure projects, equivalent to meeting the electricity needs of about 8.4 million American households.

The power resources for the project are located on federal land in the US, supported jointly by the US and Japan. Japan had previously pledged to invest $33 billion to build related energy infrastructure in exchange for a tariff reduction arrangement.

With the continuous surge in AI computing power demand, Nvidia is accelerating the layout of large-scale AI infrastructure, deepening its ties with OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and other companies. If the project moves forward, it will further solidify Nvidia's core position in the AI computing power supply chain and drive the global AI infrastructure into the "trillion-dollar level" competitive stage.
