a16z Co-founder: Opposing Regulation That Strangles AI Innovation, But Supporting Building a New Era of Trust and Security Guardrails

BlockBeats News, June 13th - Venture capital firm a16z's co-founder Marc Andreessen published a post outlining his stance on AI regulation by the U.S. government. He stated that if the so-called regulation means rules created by those who do not understand the technology, leading to complex regulations, stifling innovation through layers of approval and compliance requirements, and eventually serving as a tool for large corporations to solidify their market dominance and hinder new entrants, then he would strongly oppose such regulation. In his view, over-regulation often causes start-ups to be overwhelmed by cumbersome procedures and high compliance costs, driving innovative talent toward more open markets, while regulatory bodies themselves continue to expand, ultimately deviating from their initial goals.

Andreessen specifically criticized the regulation mindset centered around the "precautionary principle," believing that if this idea is infinitely magnified, society may refuse to embrace new technologies due to concerns about potential risks. Many regulatory measures often arrive late after fundamental changes have already occurred in technology and industry, not only failing to address real issues but also potentially becoming obstacles to innovation. He also attributed Europe's relatively lagging technological innovation in recent years to an over-regulatory culture, stating that regulation should not degenerate into a moat that protects vested interests and elevates market entry barriers.

However, Andreessen also emphasized that he is not against all forms of regulation. On the contrary, he supports rules that can establish market trust, ensure public safety, and maintain fair competition. For example, preventing AI-generated voice fraud in financial scams, preventing deepfake content from interfering with elections, preventing technology from being used to harm vulnerable groups, and ensuring that consumers and businesses can safely use new technologies. In his view, reasonable regulation is like guardrails on a highway and brakes on a car, which do not hinder technological progress but instead allow innovation to develop faster and more sustainably. Andreessen stated that the real pursuit is not "zero regulation" or "heavy regulation," but finding a balance between innovation vitality and societal trust, a stance he has always adhered to and will not retreat from.

In today's report, the U.S. government forcefully "recalled" a commercial model due to jailbreak risks, leading to Anthropic's overnight comprehensive shutdown of Fable 5 and a public protest.
