Massive Influx of Funds into Crypto Super PAC Shifts Landscape of 2026 US Primaries, Black Neighborhood Targeting Strategy Sparks Controversy

BlockBeats News, June 21st - Forbes columnist and cryptocurrency law and policy expert Tonya M. Evans pointed out that as the 2026 primaries heat up, political donations from the cryptocurrency industry are flowing into the Democratic Party primaries at an unprecedented scale. A targeting strategy for black voting districts has sparked controversy over "Blackwashing." The Democratic Party branch under the Fairshake Network, funded by Coinbase, Ripple, and a16z, named "Protect Progress," has invested over $4.9 million to support Maryland House candidate Adrian Boafo in the fifth district, predominantly Black populated. The ads in this district only talk about restricting ICE enforcement, opposing Trump, and the cost of living, deliberately avoiding any mention of cryptocurrency. Former MSNBC host Joy Reid directly labeled this as "Blackwashing" on her show—a tactic where the industry cloaks itself in progressive ideals to channel funds into Black voting districts, support Black candidates, focus on social issues in ads, and carefully conceal the industry backers.

This pattern is not unique. The same cryptocurrency PAC network spent over $5 million in Texas to help 38-year-old Christian Menefee defeat 78-year-old anti-crypto veteran Al Green. In Georgia, they invested around $4 million to boost Jasmine Clark to victory in the open primary. The modus operandi remains consistent: pro-crypto candidates, industry-funded support, ads only discussing social issues, with no mention of cryptocurrency. Evans emphasized that the dividing line for cryptocurrency funding is not race but rather "friend or foe," as the crypto super PAC also spent a considerable amount to defeat Black Democratic lawmakers who oppose cryptocurrency.

A deeper battleground lies in the U.S. Senate's "Cryptocurrency Market Structure Act" (known as the CLARITY Act), which was passed 15:9 by the Senate Banking Committee on May 14th, and scheduled for a full Senate vote on June 1st. Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks has been a key figure in advancing the bill, publicly endorsing Boafo at the same time.
