BlockBeats News, July 24th - Google released its latest report "AI and the Economy ATLAS v1.0," stating that there is currently no evidence to suggest that artificial intelligence is causing mass displacement of white-collar jobs. AI is more often assisting and collaborating with humans to complete complex tasks.
The report is based on approximately 15 million de-identified interactions from the Gemini app, Google AI Mode, and Gemini API, covering over 800 occupations, 4000 job tasks, 300 household activities, 150 countries, and 140 languages, analyzing the actual use of AI in economic activities.
The report shows that AI has reached over 68% of U.S. occupations, corresponding to around 88% of employment, but the overall penetration is still relatively low. In occupations where AI is used, AI is only involved in about 21% of tasks on average, with only about 3% of occupations achieving over 75% task coverage.
Google found that current AI applications are mainly focused on collaborative assistance rather than full automation. Non-routine cognitive work accounts for nearly 65% of AI interactions, while end-to-end automation attempts are less than 10%. AI is more commonly used for content drafting, information retrieval, review optimization, creative ideation, and strategic planning.
The report points out that AI is not only serving white-collar positions but is also entering technical and manual labor fields. For example, occupations such as automotive repair technicians and industrial mechanics are beginning to use multimodal AI for fault diagnosis, equipment inspection, and real-time learning.
Furthermore, the level of AI usage is strongly correlated with income and education levels. Data shows that for every 1% increase in the median income of U.S. occupations, AI intensity increases by over 2.5%, with high-income workers still being the most proactive group in adopting AI.
In non-work settings, over 86% of AI interactions occur outside of work, mainly used for home management, shopping research, education, healthcare, legal, and government services. Google estimates that if AI only helps U.S. users save 30 minutes of family time per week, the potential unaccounted-for market productivity value could reach around $100 billion.
The report also notes that the global adoption of AI is highly correlated with the country's wealth level, with AI usage increasing by approximately 0.9% for every 1% increase in GDP per capita. However, some Latin American and Middle Eastern countries have AI adoption rates exceeding economic level expectations.
